Personal Shopper: High-Fashion Party

Reader Request

I work as a part-time receptionist for a jewelry design company, and we're having a preview party at a hotel in Hollywood in a few weeks to premiere our fall collection. Everyone gets dressed to the nines in designer cocktail dresses for these types of parties. Unfortunately, since I'm still a college student, I don't have the money to buy a designer outfit. Can you help me put together a look that looks pricey but isn't? My budget for this whole thing is $200 or less, and I can borrow jewelry from my employer so I'll just need a dress, shoes and a bag.

Well, I have a really great idea for you - renting a dress and bag! You can rent a dress from Rent the Runway and a bag from Bag, Borrow or Steal for  waaaay less than purchasing them, and you'll fit right in with your coworkers.
